A newly-promoted WGC M3 started the game in a bright and energetic fashion whilst, disappointingly, Royston were slow off the mark at the start. The consequence was a 0-2 deficit inside 20 mins as WGC capitalised on a defensive error to score with a first time short and converted from a deflected short corner.
Royston regrouped and in the latter part of the second half started to play much better hockey. Exemplified by Jon Cheeseright's drive to the baseline and pull inside for Mike Hill to score. Royston were also unlucky not to be awarded a penalty flick when a short corner short was stopped on the line by a foot, but neither umpire saw it and the game continued. Another chance was spurned as the shot went over the bar.
The second half was all Royston's. Very nice distribution from Jim Rees and Mike Hill saw the ball moved around the pitch with ease and accuracy. Royston pressed and pressed but could not convert from open play. Finally success came through a short corner when James Parsley laid the ball inside and PJ flicked it in to the goal.
Despite strenuous efforts to get the winner, Royston couldn't find the killer touch and the game finished a draw. Both sides brought sporting attitudes and both will be looking forward to the return fixture.
