The first league game of the season saw Royston travel to an very sandy pitch to meet a Berkhamsted team that had narrowly beaten them last season. Berhkamsted had significantly strengthened their squad with the addition of young and athletic talent that enabled them to dominate the midfield throughout the first half. Indeed, thanks to excellent saves from Keith "they shall not pass" Markham and last ditch tackles from Royston's stubborn back line, Berko counted themselves unlucky to be only 1-0 up at half time. It was not, however, all one way traffic. Despite the near unending pressure, Royston steadily grew into the game and had clear chances to level, but did not take them.
The second period began with renewed energy from Royston, building on solid defence from Steve "jab tackle" Welding to deliver a domination of mid-field. Fast fluid moves with quick passing and great movement swept the ball from defence to attack in the blink of an eye with Mike "the magician" Hill pulling the strings. Under sustained pressure, and following multiple close calls, Berko conceded the lead when James "they all count" Parsley converted. More pressure from Royston yielded a second goal, only for it to be ruled out. Berko re-organised and began to win back dominance of the mid-field leaving Royston under pressure and not getting the rub of the decisions. Unfortunately two late goals sent the scoreline in Berko's favour.
Overall, a solid start to the season from Royston M3s with many positives and good performances from established and newer players alike. Looking forward to the return fixture.
