Following the excellent 4-2 win at Shefford (under difficult availability conditions), the match against Potters Bar gave Royston M3s the chance to put a team out with players in their more normal positions.
Potters Bar arrived with a team that had evolved into a development side and was thus different in nature to the side they fielded pre-Christmas. Royston made a bright start, but PB very quickly seized the initiative through their two older midfield players and canny centre-forward. Pressure was exerted, and PB could have been 1-0 up within 10 minutes but for an excellent head-height goal line save from a short corner. Royston took some encouragement from this and started to use the wings and press, leading to a goal from Tim Cheeseright who put the ball over the line after good build-up play.
In the second half Royston more urgently contained the PB midfielders, and as a result controlled the game through width and better quality passing. Mike Hill scored after a superb run through 4 defenders, and Jon Cheeseright made it a brace for the family when he spun and scored with 5 minutes left.
A good result, and a match played in good spirit. Royston M3 have now acquired their highest season points score in many years, with 2 winnable games to go.
