Following a good win over Harpenden, Royston arrived full of hope and expectation to continue their good run of form.
A bright and energetic start saw Royston seize the initiative through patient short-passing and ball retention. This gained quick reward through a goal (Mike Hill) after only 5 minutes, and was swiftly followed by a James Watson breakaway goal after 10 minutes. Berkhamsted got more in to the game as the half progressed and while Royston squandered a few chances to extend their lead, Berkhamsted came close at a short corner (saved on the line behind the keeper by Roddi Liebenberg) and then scored shortly before half-time.
The second half was initially close fought. Berkhamsted pressed, and good defending was required to maintain the lead. A Patrick Jordan flick from a short corner made the score 3-1 after 45 minutes, but Royston couldn't relax after Berkhamsted scored at the far post with 20 minutes left. Roddi Liebenberg then slotted home from the top of the D with 15 minutes to go to create a little breathing space and although Royston missed additional opportunities the game was put beyond doubt when Alex Causton scored 5 minutes before the end.
A good win, and well deserved against respectable opposition who joined Royston in playing the game in good spirit.
