Defend well and take your chance
Pitch was free early and we managed to get some good practice. At first we were worried that we had the wrong time but then oppo finally arrived. We started the game well with Brumby making a couple of useful breaks. First quarter was then pretty even with both sides moving the ball well. George had good control of the left hand side. Jake then took the ball on the left at about half way and seeing Mike W free launched a gorgeous arial which bounced just short of the D on the left hand side. Mike W controlled well and on the turn struck the ball crisply past the keeper into the bottom right of the goal. A classic strikers goal.
'Bar' then edged the second quarter making a few dangerous breaks. Baldy 69 came on for them and showed some good skills but Finn showed his class and marked him well. Wobs made a good save from a short corner. Half time came with Royston still 1-0 up.
The second half was tough playing into the wind and at times into the sun - plus Brumby, having run out of puff, or just feeling the cold, pretty much disappeared for the rest of the half. Bar had most of the possession but virtually no chances. Roddi and Ross continued to make some great tackles and the odd loose pass at the back put us under some unnecessary pressure. Alex and Mike became a bit frustrated with umps and he completely lost his cool, steam pretty much came out of his ears, he turned a shade of red and called your scribe over to tell him somewhat loudly that the the next Royston player to foul would be carded.
Bar continued to pile on the pressure but Royston held firm, in Roddi's case very firmly when he took out one of the oppos players (completely fairly) - he did take quite a long time to get up however. Oppo's umpire managed to miss one of the most obvious advantages you have ever seen. We then defended a few short corners well. Bar became increasingly desperate and piled everyone forward but to no avail and Royston proved worthy 1-0 winners.
A performance Diego Simeone would have been proud of. Defend well and take your chance (yes that is singular..)
Well done lads, a great game and leaves us well placed in second after the first round of matches - 1 point behind St A's 6s and 8 ahead of Stevenage in 3rd.
