0-0 Draw away at Broxbourne!

First and foremost, dear reader welcome back to the thunder dome that is Royston hockey. I look forward to entertaining you weekly with the musings and incredibly high standard of hockey (definitely true).

The Men’s 1st XI were back in league action this week with the previously postponed trip to Broxbourne. Massive thanks to Smudge as fixtures secretary for getting the game at an earlier time than previously scheduled. As helpful as this was the game, as the header suggest was stuck 0-0 until the final whistle, not for the lack of effort from both sides.

Royston, as you’d expect were on the attack from the off displaying some scintillating passing play to carve open the oppo defence. The pick of the first half chances, a squared ball across the face of goal, falling to one of Royston’s premier groomed men, Sebastian “Sam” Miles. Seb was denied by an outrageous save by the opposition goalkeeper, who not only managed to save the ball but also turned the ball over the bar. Truly he had no right to make the save but showed a sensational piece of athleticism to get to the shot in the open net.

Such was the theme of the game Royston were denied repeatedly by heroic goalkeeping, a matter noted by all in the Men’s 1st XI. Not even the prolific Carl “I can’t finish at the back post whilst calling for it at the back post” Taylor could put one past this monstrous performance. The work was not all for Broxbourne’s keeper as the cramped up Royston side let slip a few chances that needed to be saved by John “Princess BJ (make of this what you will)” Gourd. BJ faced a few 1 on 1 chances that were very handily hit straight at him. Bread and butter work.

Royston’s shining light of the day was hungry youth player George “The V10” Bradley. There is no hyperbole in my words when I say that this man is a machine and showed as much by the continuous work throughout the midfield. Top performance there George, shame we couldn’t bring it home.
