Youthful opposition outplayed by the Boys in Black…

Coming off the back of a strong start to the season, Royston Men’s 1st XI put in another top display towards their title charge. Make no doubts about it, this team is definitely out there to win it all this season.

Bit of pre-game banter to start. Gate was locked. Absolute shambles… (You’re getting off lightly here guys) I have quotes from players. Lets just say it really put Bullet off, more to come on that later.

Royston started the game well enough as did the Blueharts side, who’s aerial ability from the heart of their defence kept the Royston press wary. The defence coped well however and apart from the unrelenting October sunshine (I Know, weird right?) getting in the eyes of the defenders, Royston kept it clean in the first half with only the odd hesitation from the goalkeeper. In truth Blueharts were unlucky not to score with a nearly open net after a weary ball trickled past the keepers left. Alas the exuberance of youth meant the game remained level until a fantastic bit of worked play saw the erstwhile paper-thin (new nickname incoming) Carl Taylor slot away the goal! This goal saw out the half for Royston and The Crows went into the break expecting more.

AS to be expected from the boys they really picked up in the second half in an oh so familiar tale of the season. A goal from Toby Hall was the shock of the day, the ever-prolific man that he is, as he nicked a goal from the clutches of a teammate. But quite spectacularly the pick of the bunch was from a volley at the near edges of the D. Sam “God-Bod” Miles with an absolute rocket past the opposing goalkeepers face. (Shoutout to the oppo goalkeeper, who was on another level this game making save after save.) Absolutely sublime finish it was as the tears of joy from fans and pre-pubescent screams from teammates will attest.

Royston were nearly undone, however, by a foot in the D judged to be deliberate by the officials and probably correctly so. As alluded to earlier before, Andy “Bullet” Drage wasn’t in the right frame of mind for the game as his pre-game rituals were interrupted by the fiasco that was Keygategatekey (Or KGGK as it will be referred to historically...). Green Card it was!

The real narrative of todays game however was the blood feud between a normally little named member of the Men’s 1st XI and his younger brother (returning from injury). As it is a special occasion, because we won, I will say that it was entertaining to see such behemoths clash across the pitch as wherever they went the battle followed. Yes, just this once Lyndon I will say the fight was a good one to watch. Tempers remained as Royston flushed out a victory with a final goal from the ever so present Carl.

MotM was decided Via pint off and then unceremoniously undecided by a late vote, Sorry Sam and Dan, good pint off though. Troy picking up his second (half way there to a picture) through his clear determination to be the best player on the pitch. When this lad turns up there is no stopping him. The simple play was mastered this week with fantastic lateral runs through the middle and exquisite simple passing with the odd bit of flare thrown in.

Boy this was a long one. Good 4-0 win. Up the Boys in Black!

Thanks to the umpires for umpiring , didn’t score though Lyndon, did ya? ?
