The men's 1s started their pre-season preparations away against a Division 2S Hertford 1s side. Royston were trialling a new formation with a new look team under the captaincy debut of Hall.
Royston started the game brightly but it didn't take long for Hertford to show their superior class as they put 2 goals on the scoresheet in under 20 minutes from decisive counter attacking play. Royston amped up the pressure in pursuit of a goal but were unable to turn the tide, trailing 3-0 at the break. The second half came with a tactical switch that pushed Ollie 'Chad' Jones further forward which provided some new energy to Royston's attack but alas, they were unable to break an experienced Hertford defence down. The Stags continued to pick off Royston mistakes throughout the half and they looked to be taking a 6-0 win from the experience, however the clean sheet wasn't to be, as slick build up play from Robert Woodhouse and Callum Weir provided the opening Carl Taylor had been seeking all game as he was able to slide into an open goal.
To Royston's credit, they maintained a positive approach throughout despite having to chase the game. They were however, unable to keep up with the Stags who demonstrated a clinical edge consistent with teams from Division 2S, a lesson the whole team needs to take on board for the season to come.
This was a performance brimming with promise from the Crows who have provided themselves a strong platform to build on in next weeks friendly, at home to Bluharts before the season gets underway on the 21st September.
Man of the Match went to James 'Moose' Biddlecombe for a strong showing in a new, deeper position.
